The Kaohsiung Airport ChLCD display illustrates a common requirement in public spaces: information needs to remain visible for long periods, without the continuous video playback associated with televisions or advertising screens. Similar needs exist at railway stations, hospitals, and government offices.
In September 2026, we completed the installation of a display system at the family-friendly counter at Kaohsiung International Airport in Taiwan. The installation combines three 31.5-inch ChLCD full-color electronic paper panels into one wide-format information display, using reflective display technology and low-power image retention.
This project also demonstrates an important feature of ChLCD: panels can be used individually or combined to create larger information displays tailored to different locations.
Kaohsiung Airport ChLCD Display: Project Overview
The system is installed above the airport’s family-friendly counter. Three 31.5-inch ChLCD panels are arranged side by side to fit the space available above the existing counter.
The three panels can work together to form a complete panoramic visual or display different content according to operational requirements.
Unlike fixed printed signage, the digital display allows backgrounds, event graphics, and information to be changed without removing and replacing the entire physical sign.

Installing Three ChLCD Panels Above an Existing Counter

This project did not involve rebuilding the entire counter. Instead, the installation was designed around the existing counter structure and site conditions.
A multi-panel ChLCD installation involves more than mounting individual displays. On-site planning must account for horizontal alignment, spacing between panels, mounting structures, cable routing, and the overall appearance of the completed display.
Content design must also work with the hardware. Because physical seams remain between the panels, important text and key visual elements should be positioned away from these seams wherever possible to maintain readability across the combined display.
Three Panels Forming One Large Information Display
After installation, the three 31.5-inch ChLCD panels jointly presented the counter signage: “Family-Friendly Counter” and “Wheelchair & Baby Stroller.”
We placed text within the main viewing area of each panel, while extending the background across all three displays. This approach allows three separate panels to present one visually coordinated composition.
The project shows that ChLCD applications are not limited to individual electronic posters or information signs. Modular tiling allows the display area to be expanded according to the available width and information requirements.
The photographs show the completed installation, while the video below demonstrates the actual ChLCD image refresh process.
One of the key differences between ChLCD and conventional LCDs is that ChLCD does not require a continuously powered backlight to maintain an image.
During an image update, electrical power drives the liquid crystals to rearrange. Once the refresh is complete, ChLCD’s bistable characteristics allow the static image to remain visible without continuous power for image retention.
This makes ChLCD particularly suitable for information that remains on display for long periods and is updated infrequently. It is not intended to replace LCD or LED displays used for video playback or high-frame-rate animation.
Updating Visual Content on the Same Hardware

The same three-panel display is not limited to a single background or fixed layout.
For example, replacing the Alishan landscape with a green field changes the overall visual style while keeping the main family-friendly counter information in place.
For locations that need to update signage for seasons, events, brand visuals, or public information, this flexibility is a key advantage of digital displays over fixed printed graphics.
The following refresh video shows how the three panels update to a new image.
Once the update is complete, users have a new static information display without the printing, delivery, and physical replacement required for conventional printed signage.
From Landscapes to Different Themes: Full-Color Content Flexibility

In addition to Alishan and green field scenes, we tested other visuals, including a fish-themed background.
Different backgrounds produce different color impressions and visual effects on the same hardware, allowing content design to be refined for the actual installation environment.
With ChLCD, display quality depends on content design as well as hardware. High contrast, large text, clear focal points, and positioning important information away from panel seams generally help improve the viewing experience.
Why Consider ChLCD for Public Information Displays?
Airports are just one possible application.
Many public information displays do not need video that refreshes dozens of times per second. Instead, they need information to remain visible for long periods and to be updated digitally when required.
This is the type of application where ChLCD is worth evaluating.
- Airport and railway station information displays
- Bus stop signage
- Hospital digital noticeboards and information displays
- Government digital noticeboards
- Digital posters for shopping centers and retail spaces
- Campus information displays
- Smart city public information systems
- Large-format, low-power tiled displays
If an application requires continuous video, animation, or frequent content changes, LCD or LED may be more suitable. ChLCD’s main value lies in applications with infrequent updates and extended static image display.
Can ChLCD Panels Be Tiled? From Standalone Displays to Large Information Walls
The Kaohsiung Airport installation uses three 31.5-inch ChLCD panels in a horizontal arrangement, demonstrating the potential of modular tiled displays.
A single panel can serve as an independent information display. When a larger display area is required, multiple panels can be combined to suit the available space.
However, a tiled ChLCD installation differs from a seamless LED video wall. Bezels and physical seams remain between panels, so the layout must incorporate these seams into the content design.
For digital noticeboards, transport information, public service counters, and large static information walls, this modular approach offers another display option.
Frequently Asked Questions About ChLCD
Does a ChLCD display need to stay plugged in to retain an image?
ChLCD requires power primarily during image updates. Once a refresh is complete, its bistable characteristics retain the static image without continuous power for image retention, unlike conventional backlit LCDs. Associated control and communication systems may still require power.
Can ChLCD play video?
ChLCD is not designed for high-frame-rate video. If the main requirement is video, animation, or frequently changing dynamic content, LCD or LED is generally more suitable. ChLCD is better suited to static information displayed for long periods with periodic updates.
Can multiple ChLCD panels be combined?
Yes. This Kaohsiung International Airport project uses three 31.5-inch ChLCD panels arranged horizontally. The number of panels and their arrangement should be planned according to site conditions, viewing distance, content, and mounting structure.
Where can ChLCD be used?
Depending on project requirements, ChLCD can be used in transport facilities, healthcare facilities, public information systems, digital noticeboards, retail displays, bus stop signage, and other locations that need static information to remain visible for long periods.
Planning a Digital Signage or Tiled ChLCD Project?
Each location has different requirements for display size, indoor or outdoor use, update frequency, power supply, viewing distance, and mounting structure.
We provide ChLCD solutions in multiple sizes and can help plan standalone or tiled installations based on actual site requirements.
If you are evaluating displays for airports, railway stations, hospitals, bus stops, smart cities, retail spaces, digital noticeboards, or low-power digital signage, share your site photographs, intended dimensions, and application requirements with us. We can help assess a suitable ChLCD display solution.
